I should be glad to receive your covering authority

for these advances and for other loans on similar terms

which it may be considered advisable to make to approved

officers from time to time.

Housing accommodation suitable for senior officers is

difficult to obtain at a reasonable rental, while Government

quarters are available for only approximately twenty five per

cent of officers eligible to occupy them. I consider it

therefore desirable that every encouragement should be

given to those who are prepared to build suitable houses

for their own occupation in the European residential areas.

3. I would add that the Government has in the past

made similar advances although these do not appear to have

been reported to you at the time.

I attach a return giving particulars of loans to

five Government officers amounting in all to $50,027.0de

of which a sum of $1,710.04 remains outstanding.
